A brief history and overview of the development of the cultural and creative industries including signifi-cant influences will be presented. The origins of cultural entrepreneurship, which includes the organisation, substance and division of creative work as it has developed over the past sixty years; the intersection of informational and cultural production with cognitive capitalism; debates and mechanisms of intellectual property; as well as engagement with the role of cultural industries across networks, transdisciplinary institutions (such as the University, the Museum etc.), cities and states will be discussed.
An introduction to the methodologies of Design Thinking which has emerged as one of the most important, successful, and sought after research methods in contemporary management theory will be explained. This development has been largely inspired by the success of the use of a range of different “usercentred” design research methods in the development of a number of key recent technologies. The ideas generated sing Design Thinking methodologies will be used to develop initial ideas in order to identify potential entrepreneurial opportunities.

On completion of this course, students should be able to:
• reflect critically on the composition of cultural industries and apply this theoretical knowledge to diffe-rent institutional contexts and to their own practices or enterprises;
• consider the application of cultural theory to a range of contemporary cultural forms, from art and fashion, to cinema, performance, creative technologies, and advertising;
• identify and describe in detail the ways in which creative and cultural production intersect with mar-kets, institutions and states;
• situate their creative practice/ entrepreneurial idea within the broader contexts of European and global cultural economies;
• develop a creative idea and provide the background and rationale for selecting this model or practice showing how it uses their skills and experience;
• present a business plan for an entrepreneurial practice or enterprise.
