Curriculum vitae
Émilie Passignat received her PhD in art history from the University of Pisa. In her doctoral dissertation, under the supervision of Antonio Pinelli, she investigated the reception of Mannerist sculpture in France in the 17th and 18th centuries. Part of this research has been published in journals as Cahiers d'Histoire de l'Art and Histoire de l'art. Some of her reflections on the mannerist sculpture came out in Revival and Invention: Sculpture Material and its History (2011), with the essay Twisting marble : Observations on the Figura serpentinata and its Applications.
Her research concerns artistic historiography, theories of art, sculpture and decorative cycles, with the background question of the reception and description of the work of art, as well as cultural exchanges in Modern Europe, especially between Italy and France.
Her interest in the history of criticism has led her to collaborate on the FIRB research program entitled “Archivio informatizzato delle testimonianze di cultura artistica e letteraria in fondi manoscritti tra Ottocento e Novecento” (University of Florence, Foundation Memofonte). A first part of the results of this study has been published in the volume Argan et Chastel, the historien de l'art, savant and politique (Paris 2014). She collaborated with various other Italian and French universities, for research programs and for teaching, and participated in national and international conferences in Paris, Brussels, Boston, Berlin, Leuven, Liege, Montreal, Rome, Venice, Florence, Arezzo, Bari, Montpellier, Bordeaux, New York.
She has the Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale alle funzioni di professore universitario di seconda fascia – Settore concorsuale 10/B1 Storia dell’arte and the Qualification aux fonctions de maître de conférences en section 22 – Histoire et civilisations: histoire des mondes modernes, histoire du monde contemporain; de l’art; de la musique.
She recently published the book Il Cinquecento. Le fonti per la storia dell’arte (Rome 2017).
Part of her latest contributions focuses on Giorgio Vasari’s Ragionamenti, Palazzo Vecchio and Medici’s Florence. Recently published essays deals also with the question of visual norm and with the construction and evolution of artistic vocabulary. Forthcoming publications concern the construction of art history during the 20th century.
