ERC P-AGE: “Punishing to Protect?” examines New Social Defence as a humanitarian reformulation of criminological positivism that,alongside proposing a novel penal doctrine,envisioned a comprehensive project for transforming modern society.It treats social defence and welfare as entangled technologies within a single conceptual framework.Combining conceptual analysis of the Old and New Social Defence theories with research on their institutionalisation in UN crime prevention programmes,the project traces the generalisation of punitive reason through its reformulation as “penal welfarism.”
