The project

"The Shape of Water - Arts in Venice Summer School" will bring together lecturers from the four partnering institutions (Ca' Foscari University of Venice, IUAV, the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory and the Academy of Fine Arts). These experts will accompany the participants on a journey that combines a direct experience of the city with guided tours and lectures on archeology, architecture, history of and music, performing arts and environmental sciences.

The central topic will be water, the most characteristic element of our territory and its phenomena. The act of walking will become a tool to explore the city and its close surroundings.

To find out more about this experimental project, we spoke with Stefano Riccioni, professor of Medieval Art History at the Ca' Foscari Department Philosophy and Cultural Heritage and Scientific Director of the Summer School.

Professor, what kind of activities will “The Shape of Water” offer?

The project will be developed over two weeks and it will be highly experiential, as it is based on on-site learning. Additionally, the different experts involved will give participants a very comprehensive view of the art world, by combining direct experience in the city with educational visits and in-person lectures on topics such as archaeology, architecture, urban planning, history of visual arts and music, performing arts and environmental sciences.
We have also planned a workshop, led by the artist Giorgio Andreotta Calò, where the students will be involved in visual, tactile and sound exercises aimed at shaping their own vision of the city.
A second workshop will instead be focused on designing a project that can convey their personal experience with the city and its ecosystem.
The combination of different humanistic disciplines is in itself an original prospect and a challenging proposal, as it aims to stimulate the curiosity of the participants, while also offering them new opportunities to gather more knowledge.
