On 3 November at 6 p.m. at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, New York novelist Nicole Krauss was the first guest of the fourteenth edition of the Incroci di Civiltà (“Crossroads of Civilizations”) literary festival. Ms Krauss received the Francesca Bortolotto Possati-Ca' Foscari Prize and converse with Chiara Valerio and Pia Masiero. The novelist talked about the central topics of her latest publication, "To Be a Man" — a collection of short stories from all over the world that explore with much originality topical issues such as violence, desire, and self-discovery, to shed light on the gulf that sometimes seems to separate the male and female universe.

The Prize was being awarded to a female novelist who places women at the centre of her books, describing them at various stages of their lives, from childhood to adolescence, as they discover their sexuality and welcome a new life, and during their old age. The author's most celebrated novel is "The History of Love" (2005), which is dedicated to grandparents in a complicated mix of nationalities. "To Be a Man" adopts a feminist perspective.

“La letteratura ci salverà dall’estinzione” (Literature will save us from extinction) is one of the books that will be presented this year — and it could very well be the motto of the fourteenth edition. From 3 to 6 November, twenty-six writers from fourteen countries will meet in Venice. This year's authors come from the UK, Germany, Italy, India, the Netherlands, France, the USA, Serbia, Turkey, China, Afghanistan, Republic of the Congo, Argentina, and Haiti.

In addition to Nicole Krauss, the festival will host Ulla Lenze, Wilfried N'Sondé, Antoine Pecqueur, Jan Brokken, H.M. van den Brink, Caterina Edwards, Vittorio Longhi, Aslı Erdoğan, Matthias Kappler, Geling Yan, Mandeep Rai, Rodrigo Fresan, Nicola Lagioia, Heddi Goodrich, Oto Horvat, Chiara Piaggio, Igiaba Scego, James Noël, Gholam Najafi, Antonio Moresco, Tiziano Scarpa, and Carla Benedetti.

On Saturday 6 November at 6:30 p.m., the festival will conclude at Auditorium Santa Margherita with Vinicio Capossela. Mr Capossela, an eclectic artist, will present his most recent book, Eclissica, which explores the deepest corners of humanity.

The very last appointment in the 2021 edition of Incroci di Civiltà will be on Sunday 7 November at 11:30 a.m.  at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Audiorium Lo Squero, where Maria Ida Biggi and Piermario Vescovo, together with Roberto Bianchin, will honour Maruizio Scaparro's Carnevale.

All information about bookings, admissions and the organisation of the festival is available at the Incroci di Civiltà website.
