VERA Centre

The Venice centre in Economic and Risk Analytics for Public Policies (VERA) is the new Centre of the Department of Economics focusing on big data applied to social welfare and wellbeing, risk analytics and evaluation of public policies. A primary aim of the Centre is to inform policy makers and to provide scientific support for decisions concerning several policy challenges such as the sustainability of welfare and health systems, the phenomenon of migration, the impact of ageing, the effects of climate change, the mitigation strategies of environmental impacts, the emergence of policy and financial instability.

Venice centre in Economic and Risk Analytics for public policies (VERA)

The activities of the Centre will address four of the Ca’ Foscari Research Institutes for Global Challenges (Complexity, Social Innovation, International Studies, Green and Blue Growth) through methodologies and advanced systems based on the use of big data, social networks, georeferencing, experimental data (lab and field experiments).

One of the most important goals is to enhance production and use of big data and to develop economic, mathematical and statistical models applicable to different economic sectors such as agriculture and environment, health, finance, tourism and sustainability. These models will be in line with the objectives of Industry 4.0 and the digital transformation.

The VERA Centre is funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research [ITA] through the Department of Excellence Project.

Innovating research methods, adapting them to calculation models that can exploit the great potential of microdata and big data from different sources.

Strengthening research

Strengthening experimental research conducted in lab and field (lab and field experiments).

Improving public policies

Widening the fields of application of the analysis of and methodologies for the evaluation of public policies in order to improve their quality and effectiveness.

Training future decision makers

Training future economists and analysts able to provide scientific support for analysis and to identify potential public policy actions.

Attracting international talents

Enhancing international talent selection and recruitment in order to set up an international multidisciplinary and multicultural research team with the best talents on board.


Ca' Foscari team tops Bloomberg Trading Challenge at European level

The students of Ca’ Foscari’s Department of Economics obtained fantastic results in the Bloomberg Trading Challenge, an international competition in which teams of 3 to 5 university students challenge each other to make the most informed financial investments, using data made available by the Bloomberg Terminal. Out of almost 50 teams, Ca’ Foscari obtained the highest position at a European level.

VERA Academy Internship Grants - 7th edition

The VERA Centre is pleased to announce the publication of the seventh VERA Academy call for 12 internship grants € 1,843.31 each (gross salary), for a four-month training period to be held by June 2022 in the VERA Research Center of the Department of Economics.

Incentives for students enrolling in Summer & Winter Schools

The VERA Centre offers 50 incentives to students wishing to enrol in Summer or Winter Schools which will be held in-person or online. The incentives will be assigned to students of the Department of Economics Master’s Degree Programmes, wishing to apply for Summer or Winter Schools, held by Italian or foreign organisations, either public or private. The enrolment to the School must take place by 31st December 2021.

SidE Summer Schools - Networks Econometrics and Bayesian Methods in Economics and Finance

The Italian Econometric Association (SIdE) in collaboration with the Venice centre in Economic and Risk Analytics for Public Policies (VERA) organizes the Summer Schools on Networks Econometrics and Bayesian Multivariate Models and Forecasting in Economics and Finance. A reduced fee of 30 Euro is foreseen for PhD and master students of the Department of Economics. The deadline for application is May 14th, 2021 (deadline for fee payment: June 7th 2021).
