European Universities Transforming into an Open Inclusive Academy for 2050
Ca’ Foscari is the only Italian university to have joined EUTOPIA (European Universities Transforming into an Open Inclusive Academy for 2050), an alliance of 10 European universities who share a vision and collaborate to build the universities of the future.
In 2019, EUTOPIA was one of the first European university alliances to obtain funding through the European Universities Initiative (Erasmus +, Key Action 2: Cooperation among organisations and institutions — Partnerships for Excellence). These transnational alliances have two main objectives: to increase the international competitiveness of European universities, and to contribute to the strengthening of the European identity.
The EUTOPIA alliance is daring, enthusiastic, and on a mission to develop innovative pedagogical models that extend beyond national borders. The universities in the alliance are student-centred and committed to reinforcing social cohesion by focussing on excellence and inclusion. EUTOPIA supports challenge-driven research and teaching; it promotes the awareness and empowerment of European graduates; it encourages the mobility of people and ideas, to stimulate debates and involvement. EUTOPIA’s partners share values such as integrity, academic freedom, sharing of knowledge, and openness to the international community.
The project is currently in the middle of a three-year pilot phase which is the launch of the universities of the future. The new contribution of the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission (EACEA), which the consortium will apply for, would provide funds to EUTOPIA for 2022-2026 and 2026-2028. But the alliance looks ahead as far as 2050.
The pilot project includes seven key areas, each with a specific aim:
By 2025 EUTOPIA will establish the foundations of a federated university. This project has five main objectives:
EUTOPIA’s long-term objective is the creation of a fully federated inter-university campus alliance by 2050. This alliance will be oriented towards future challenges and student-centred, committed to the potentiality of Europe’s regions and to the principles of openness and inclusion
