Course overview

The Master's Degree programme in Science and Technology of Bio and Nanomaterials is intended to train graduates who are competent in the field of advanced materials of application interest. Particular emphasis is placed on the application of nanomaterials, bio-nanomaterials and nanotechnologies, which are innovative fields at the national level.

During their studies, graduates acquire transversal skills and competences to undertake roles of high responsibility in the management of complex processes such as the design, synthesis and characterisation of materials, including biological ones.

The Master's Degree programme lasts two years and requires the acquisition of 120 university credits (CFU) for the award of the degree. The 12 exams in the programme will grant the acquisition of 96 CFUs. The remaining credits are acquired through other educational activities such as an internship and the final thesis. The internship can be carried out either at the University's research laboratories, renowned national and international research laboratories, or companies.

The educational programme includes both theoretical and laboratory classes concerning the preparation and characterisation of nano- and biomaterials. In particular, the study of the properties of nanomaterials and their chemical-physical characteristics, methods of synthesis and preparation, and applications both in the field of advanced research and in the technological and industrial field are explored.

In this sector, the local job market offers numerous opportunities, as our area is rich in industries and research centres dedicated to the development of both mature and innovative materials.

Occupational profiles

Master's graduates in Sciences and Technologies of Bio- and Nano-Materials may be employed in all technical sectors, including managerial positions, of companies dealing with manufacturing, processing and development of materials of various nature, both structured and functional. Proper career opportunities may be also found in research and development laboratories, both public and private, operating in the field of materials investigation and certification.

Attendance

The attendance to lessons and laboratory  is compulsory: at least 70% of classes and labs should be attended, unless otherwise stated in the course syllabus.

Examination assessment and graduation

The educational activities include classroom teaching, workshops and internships, in order to acquire wide-ranging skills that can be readily transferable into the world of work.
During the whole university career, the various skills and knowledge acquired by students will be assessed through written and oral examinations.
The degree exam consists in writing a thesis, which must possess the characters of originality, exhaustive documentation and scientific investigation and which will be discussed with a committee of university professors and experts.
