RESEARCH
Subjects
The research focuses on five main topics:
1) Coinage in marginal contexts of the Greek and Roman world and the spread of coinage.
Starting from the study of coin finds (both hoards and single finds), the research at first has dealt with the spread of roman coins beyond the Roman frontier in Europe during the late republican age and the early Empire (on this topic a seminar was organized at Milan University, 24.11.2011); afterwards the research has dealt with similar phenomena in other chronological and spatial contexts (Trace, Siciliy, North-Western Greece)
2) Coin finds in Regio X Venetia et Histria.
The research focused on coin finds from Veneto, in particular from the ancient urban centre of Altino (VE), in collaboration con Prof. L. Sperti who conducted archaeological surveys and excavations in this place.
3) Roman provincial coinage.
The research has dealt with different aspects of the coinage issued by the mint of Alexandria in Egypt and by some mints in Asia Minor, especially the Roman colony of Alexandria Troas; object of the research has been the systematic study of coin series (with the aim of dressing coin catalogues) and the investigation of specific issues and themes. Moreover, the research focused on the history of numismatic scholarship (in particular with a study on the Italian collector G. Dattari, with A. Savio).
4) Ancient metrology
Besides studying and publishing several ancient, mostly Roman, weights, the relationship between different ancient weight-systems has been investigated; the research has dealt also with surface-measures in the Roman world (project PRIN 2009; co-ordinator Prof.ssa Cresci).
5) Aspects of the Roman economy and the monetary production in the late Late Republic and Augustan age.
The study focused at first on the iconography of the Roman coins and the relationship with their ideological context. On this topic two conferences have been organized with F. Rohr (Tra repubblica e principato: esperienze di comunicazione politica, Venice, 13.12.2010; Forme di rappresentazione e autorappresentazione dei Viri Militares a Roma tra repubblica e principato: iconografia monetaria, epigrafia e storiografia, Venice, 15.10.2013); a study on the wealth of the elites in this period has been also conducted.
