I wanted to share three courses that I have recently announced on the Ferdowsi School website. These are the first three courses of the 2027 winter semester, with more to follow.
1. Introduction to Pahlavi: Winter School of Zoroastrian Middle Persian (January 4 - January 21, 2027).
A comprehensive introduction to Middle Persian, designed for anyone wishing to begin learning Pahlavi from scratch. The course will cover Middle Persian grammar and writing systems, introduce the academic literature and major publications in the field, and explore the historical development of Pahlavi studies, among other topics.
2. The Shahname: Introduction to the Iranian Epic - The Story of Rustam and Isfandyār (January 8 - February 26, 2027)
An introduction to the Shahname and its language through one of its most celebrated stories, the tragedy of Rostam and Esfandiar. Alongside an introduction to the epic, its history, and its academic study, we will explore its language, historical phonology, manuscript tradition, earliest surviving manuscripts, historical orthography, and much more.
3. Introduction to Academic Persian: How to Read Scholarly Literature in Persian (January 28 - March 18, 2027)
An introduction to the language of Iranian academic publications, focusing not only on the nuances and conventions of academic prose but also on the history of Iranian scholarship, its major and reliable authors, and the critical assessment of scholarship published today. The course is intended to open the door to a wealth of valuable literature and to help bridge the gap between Iranian and Western academia.
