The second course's module is part of the "Global Studies" and "Eastern Europe Studies" programs. This module aims at completing the path started with the first module by touching topics such as nontariff trade barriers, balance of payments, foreign exchange markets, open-economy political economy and the political economy of environment. The course is entirely taught in English.
At the end of the course the students are expected to acquire:

- knowledge about the theoretical economic framework and its application for the analysis of topics such as: nontariff trade barriers, foreign exchange markets, open-economy political economy, the political economy of the environment.
- ability to apply the tools provided to the analysis of issues concerning: nontariff trade barriers, the functioning of foreign exchange markets and open-economies, environmental action.
- ability to identify and discuss issues concerning: nontariff trade barriers, the functioning of foreign exchange markets and open-economies, environmental action.
The knowledge of the basic principles of economics is an advantage. The knowledge of the topics touched within module 1 (by prof. Barbieri) is a pre-requisite for module 2.

3. The Foreign Exchange Market and Exchange Rates [11]
4. Exchange Rate Determination [12]
5. Adjustments with Flexible and Fixed Exchange Rates [13]
6. Adjustment Policies [14]
7. Political Economy of the Environment [12 and 20]

Finally, if needed, references to additional teaching material (articles, reports, slides, etc.) will be provided in class.
A final written exam will be taken to assess the acquisition of the targeted knowledge. The exam lasts 1.5 hours. The exam includes multiple choice questions and open questions and/or exercises of a quantitative and theoretical nature. During the exam it is forbidden to use books, notes, telephones and any other electronic device, except for the calculator.
