This course belongs to the teaching activities of the second year course of the Ph.D. in Economics.
The purpose of the course is to discuss results from the theoretical and empirical literature on household finance.
Students will become familiar with recent advances in household finance and with economic literature examining household and individual choices within this field.
They will strengthen their ability to analyze results from the literature and to elaborate research questions using theoretical and empirical tools.
Regular and active participation in teaching activities offered by the course and individual study will enable students to become familiar with theoretical results and empirical findings related to topics in household finance.
Microeconomics, Macoreconomics, Econometrics.
The course will cover the following topics:
• Introduction: What is household finance?
• Credit constraints
• Buffer stock model
• Estimating Euler equations
• Empirical literature: effects of expected and unexpected income changes, wealth shocks and uncertainty on consumption
• Household portfolios
• Housing and mortgages
• Consumption and income inequality
• Financial literacy
• Retirement decision
The course is based on lecture notes and the direct reading of a number of articles from the literature.
A full list of papers will be provided during classes.
Students will discuss papers covering topics of the course and will outline a research project related to any one of the topics discussed in the course.
The course follows a conventional teaching approach, based on lectures and interactive discussions.
