This is a core course for all students enrolled in the Foundation Year. Since English is the sole language of instruction at the Ca’ Foscari School for International Education, the course provide support to students who need to develop their academic language skills.
Demonstrate and apply knowledge of basic essay structure, including introduction, body and conclusion
Employ the various stages of the writing process, including pre-writing, writing and re-writing
Employ descriptive, narrative and expository modes;
Demonstrate ability to write for an academic audience
Demonstrate understanding of and apply the principles of effective paragraph structure;
Write concise sentences;
Employ quotation, paraphrase and summary;
Introduce, position and integrate source material into the body of an essay;
Recognize and correct basic grammatical errors, specifically errors of subject/verb agreement, verb tense, pronoun agreement, usage of prepositions and articles;
Improve academic and idiomatic vocabulary;
Employ socially appropriate language
Read, analyse and respond to assigned readings with an understanding of structure and mechanics of scientific articles (abstract, introduction, etc.);
Identify effective writing techniques in their own work and in peer writing.
Employ correct MLA or APA citation style, including parenthetical, in-text citation and works-cited pages.
Evaluate sources for relevance and reliability
Avoid plagiarism
Link academic writing to academic speaking
Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
Paragraph structure (topic sentence, supporting examples, transition sentence)
Basic rhetorical modes (narration, description, exposition)
Writing process (pre-writing, writing, re-writing)
Effective use of quotation, paraphrase and summary
Stylistics (vocabulary, conciseness)
Correct paper formatting
Grammar & mechanics as needed (signposting, linkers)
The final grade will be based on four separate assessments:
• 3 mid-term exams made up of 3 parts: Part 1 testing Grammar and Use of English; Part 2 testing Reading Comprehension skills and Part 3 testing writing skills (20% of the final grade each);
• a final exam made up of 3 parts: Part 1 testing Grammar and Use of English; Part 2 testing Reading Comprehension skills and Part 3 testing Writing skills (30% of the final grade).

The course will follow a task-based approach requiring students to actively engage with the texts provided through in-class debates, short essays, and other assignments.
