This module is an introduction to the contemporary debates on gender and sexuality. Students will be guided through most relevant interdisciplinary debates exploring issues relating to gender and sexual identities and representations, to gender models in society, gender based knowledge and stereotypes. We will look at the role of arts, media and representation in shaping gendered models and images. Gendered experiences of violence, trauma, memory and belonging will be matter of discussion. Finally, we talk about the impact of new technologies in the field of sexuality and reproduction.
The course will combine theoretical discussions from feminist theory with examples from empirical studies and everyday realities. Students will be invited to reflect on their own perspectives as well as to develop the necessary analytical skills to understand the meaning of gender and sexuality in different contexts, at the global level.
No previous knowledge is needed.
