Contenuti
The course will explore the cultural and mental world of the early modern Elizabethan and Jacobean periods regarding occult practices—a society that readily incorporated magic, witchcraft, astrology, and alchemy into its 'world picture'. Playwrights exploited the beliefs with which their audiences were familiar, bringing to the stage intriguing fantasies of witches and magic rituals. Such representations show how a clear link developed in the minds of early modern writers between magic and theatricality.
The course will investigate how the emergence of the 'stage witch' as a recognizable archetype connected with questions of gender in the political and social realms. Furthermore, it will examine how adaptations and remediations of 'witch plays' have interpreted, refashioned, and updated the discourse of witchcraft for contemporary readers and spectators. Part of the course will be devoted to the analysis of adaptations of Macbeth and The Tempest in popular culture and children’s literature.
