Abstract

My research project involves the first systematic investigation of the evidences of sacred cultures in ancient southern Campania focusing on the Sarno river valley, in order to build the first inventory of pre-Roman places of worship for this territory. The research aims to reconstruct the ancient topography of the region, the complex occupational dynamics of the territory and the cultural interaction (connectivity and hybridization forms) between Italics populations, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans, as well as the worship practices and the characteristics of the divine figures cult holders of the Italic sanctuaries, starting from the VIIIth century BC until the Romanization of the territory. Employing a multidisciplinary approach the archaeological, historical-religious, geo-environmental and topographic aspects are investigated by examining a vast published and unpublished archaeological documentation, considering all the feasible expressions of the cult phenomena. This research methodology involves the study of data offered by literary tradition, archaeological evidence and epigraphic documentation.
