His first scientific field of research has been political, institutional and social history of the Early Middle Ages. Later his interests have been directed toward new research fields: the problem of ethnic identities between late antiquity and early middle ages, the relationship between history and anthropology and, in particular, between history and archaeology. He studied Italian history, especially the Lombard period; other essays concern the origins of Venice and the history of the Carolingian time in Italy. He studied also the problem of chivalry in Italian cities during the central and final centuries of the Middle Ages.

Formerly, he has been leader of a research group wich prepares a corpus of medieval inscriptions in Veneto, Lombardia orientale and Romagna up to 1199; director of the revue "Storia e dossier"; member of scientific Committee of the revue "Mélanges de l'Ecole Française de Rome. Moyen Age". At present, he is member of the Scientific Committee of the Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medioevo (Rome) and of the scientific committee of the website "Reti Medievali. Iniziative on line per gli studi medievistici". He is cofounder and member of the executive committee of the Centro interuniversitario per la storia e l'archeologia dell'alto medio - SAAME (Università di Bologna, Padova, Siena, Ca' Foscari Venezia); as part of SAAMe, he directs the series "Atti dei seminari internazionali" (edited by Brepols) and - with Sauro Gelichi - "Altomedioevo" (edited by Viella).
