Degree programme regulations

The final exam consists in the presentation and discussion of the master's degree thesis in front of a Commission made up of at least three academics, including the student's supervisor and assistant supervisor.

For the Chinese English-Italian Translation and Interpreting curriculum, the thesis must be an original paper concerning the Chinese language on a topic agreed with the supervisor, and be conducted on texts and with sources in Chinese language. The thesis must be introduced by an abstract in English and also by an introduction in Chinese (about 400 characters). The theses can either be of a theoretical-methodological or of a practical nature:

• Theoretical-methodological option: the thesis will consist in an in-depth analysis of a theoretical or methodological aspect in the field of linguistics, translation or interpreting
• Practical option: the thesis will consist in the translation of a text of a specialised, non-fiction or literary nature, accompanied by a linguistic commentary and, where necessary, by a glossary. The text to be translated should be about 30 pages long (approximately 12,000-15,000 Chinese characters). It is not mandatory to include in the thesis the text in the original language; it can, however, be included, depending on the type of thesis and on the recommendation of the supervisor

For the English-Spanish Specialised Translation and the English-Italian Sign Language (LIS), Spanish-Italian Sign Language (LIS) Specialised Translation curricula, the thesis must be an original paper concerning the English, Spanish or the Italian Sign Language on a topic agreed with the supervisor, and be conducted on texts and with sources in one of the languages studied. The thesis must be written in a foreign language, or — for students of the Italian Sign Language only — in Italian. If the translation is from a foreign language into Italian, the introduction, commentary and any other textual components must be written in the foreign language. The abstract must be written in English. The thesis can either be of a theoretical-methodological or of a practical nature:

• Theoretical-methodological option: the thesis will consist in an in-depth analysis of a theoretical or methodological aspect in the field of linguistics, translation or interpreting of the Italian Sign Language
• Practical option: the final exam will consist in the translation of a text of a specialised, non-fiction or literary nature, or of audiovisual content, accompanied by a linguistic commentary and, where necessary, by a glossary. The text to be translated should be about 15-20 pages long.The source text (the text in the original language) must be included in the thesis

The final exam corresponds to 24 ECTS credits. The supervisor must be an academic of the course or of the Department of Asian and North African Studies, with sinological knowledge, or an academic of the Department of Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies with knowledge of English, Spanish or the Italian Sign Language.

Contacting a supervisor for your thesis - Sinology

1. Consider the timing required: the MA thesis should be requested and agreed upon with the supervisor a year prior to the graduation session considered or at the beginning of the second year at the lastest.
2. Before contacting a prospective supervisor, please check the document “Professors thesis profile sinological area [ITA]” attached.
3. Send a formal request to the professor in an email, with the following information:
   • enrolled Master’s Degree
   • abstract (max. 300 words)
   • index/summary
   • bibliography (at least 4-5 titles)
   • considered graduation session

4. The e-mail must be sent from the student’s institutional email address (matriculationnumber@stud.unive.it) with the following object: "Master’s thesis request" ("richiesta tesi magistrale").
5. Wait for the professor’s answer to agree on a topic and work methodology.
