Degree Programme Regulations

Final exam requirements

The final exam requires writing a paper under the supervision of a lecturer, focusing on topics related to the course’s learning objectives or data collected during an internship. The paper doesn’t need to be original research, but it must be conducted with scientific rigour and structured using a sound methodology.

The purpose of the Final Exam is to apply, test, analyse (including using digital tools), and communicate the knowledge you have gained throughout the degree programme. It provides an opportunity to apply the research, critical thinking, and communication skills developed during your studies.

How the final exam works

Students who meet the requirements set out in the University Regulations agree on a Final Exam topic with a supervisor from either the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme in Environmental Sciences.

The paper can be based on one of the following:

  1. field or laboratory work: research carried out in the field or in a lab, including at partner research centres or universities in Italy or abroad;
  2. internships: a critical analysis of the data collected during internship activities, whether carried out within or outside the University;
  3. literature review: a systematic review of scientific literature and/or the creation of environmental databases;
  4. science communication and education: Activities or the creation of materials for public engagement or science education, including digital resources.

Your supervisor will assist you in designing your project and writing your paper. The final exam provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate the skills you have developed in research, analysis, and scientific communication.

To help you establish a solid foundation in systematically gathering scientific information—an essential skill for preparing your paper—it is advisable that you attend the bibliography/literature research courses offered by the Scientific and Technology Library (BAS).

Once your supervisor has approved your paper, you will need to submit it online following the procedures and deadlines set by the University. You will then apply for graduation in the most suitable dates, as agreed with your supervisor. Details on how to apply for graduation and the admission requirements for the final exam can be found on the University’s website.

Final degree grade

The final grade is calculated as follows:

  • your weighted average calculated in hundred-and-tenths (based on all exams taken, including any extra ones);
  • the mark for your final exam (from 0 to 6 points, awarded by your supervisor),
  • any bonus points awarded by default according to University rules.

The final exam may be assessed based not only on the paper but also on your overall academic record. The awarding of honours (lode) is at the discretion of the supervisor. The graduation ceremony and official awarding of your degree will take place on Graduation Day, which is held for each session in accordance with the University’s procedures.
