Ibrahim Darghuthi (Tozeur, 1955) is one of the leading figures of contemporary Tunisian literature. A novelist, translator, and former teacher, he has played a significant role in Tunisia’s cultural scene and served as Director and Vice-President of the Tunisian Writers’ Union. Known for his honest depiction of social issues in southern Tunisia and his bravery in tackling controversial topics, he has written twelve novels, ten short story collections, and children's literature (earning the Mustafa Azzuz Prize in 2016 for work in this area). Among his best-known works are The Dervishes Return in Exile (1992), And Now the Apocalypse (1994) and Windows into the Heart of the Night (1996), all translated into French, as well as Le palme muoiono in piedi, translated into Italian by Andrea Facchin in 2021 for Edizioni Ca’ Foscari (in the series I grandi libri della letteratura araba). Darghuthi has received numerous international awards, including the Comar d’Or (1999 and 2003) and the al-Quds al-Kubrà Prize for Short Fiction (2010). His works have been the subject of extensive academic study throughout the Arab world and Europe.
