Brushtalk Confessions: Nineteenth-Century Korean Catholic Women Writings

The study presents the early nineteenth-century Chosŏn Catholic practices of vernacular confession as a form of translation. Within the Sinographic linguistic context, in which spoken Korean and written Chinese coexisted, Chosŏn Catholics practiced both auricular and written confession through translation. Confession could be "heard" in writing or performed synchronously between confessor and confessant through “brush talk,” a method of communicating through written Chinese. The study shows how this multimodality of confession created a space for Chosŏn Catholics to navigate the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris. Special attention will be given to Chosŏn Catholic women, whose celibacy was disallowed by the French missionaries. Introducing the stories of celibate women, the study shows how women of late Chosŏn navigated the multimodality of confessional practice.
