New Research in Gender and Sexuality - Online seminar (Zoom)

Online Seminar

This seminar reflects on photography and the archive as important critical tools in women’s and gender studies.  Alix Beeston focuses on skin or flesh in the female nude (Louis-Camille d’Olivier, Anne Brigman, Imogen Cunningham, Madame d’Ora, Laura Aguilar, Deana Lawson, and Zanele Muholi) to theorize the subjective and embodied reality of all acts of seeing, and the forms of motivated involvement that obtain in the photographic image. Margaret Sönser Breen explores ways in which critical tools and theoretical frameworks of recovery—from digitalization to feminist re-vision and gender insubordination— can enable scholars today to dignify the lives of earlier lesbian and queer women writers who have been relegated to obscurity, focusing as a case in point on German writer Aimée Duc. Respondents: Anne Anlin Cheng and Marian Eide.
