The Role of Light Absorbing Particles in Snow and Ice on Svalbard: A Focus on Dust

Aula D, edificio ZETA - Campus Scientifico via Torino

Speaker: Susan Kaspari, Central Washington University (USA)

Abstract:
Light absorbing particles in snow and ice lead to snow darkening, and can accelerate snow and ice melt.  Numerous studies have investigated black carbon in snow and ice cores from Svalbard, but less work has been done on dust.  In this talk recent results of dust concentrations in Svalbard snow and ice are presented, and implications for variations in dust deposition over time are explored.

Bio Sketch:
Susan Kaspari is a Geological Sciences professor from Central Washington University in the United States, and currently is on sabbatical as a Fulbright Scholar in Norway at the Norwegian Polar Institute.  Her research investigates the role of light absorbing particles (black carbon, dust and snow organics) in snow albedo reductions and snow and ice melt, and she uses ice cores to reconstruct climate and environmental change.  Her main research study areas have been in Antarctica, the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau, the Washington Cascades, and most recently Svalbard.
