TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION MANAGEMENT

The course addresses the primary challenges that firms encounter in managing technology and innovation within a dynamic and turbulent environment. The objective of the course is to analyze the impact of strategically organizing innovation on explaining the differences in performance among firms. Specifically, we aim to uncover the mechanisms in technology and innovation management that elucidate the persistent variations in economic performance between industries, and even among firms within the same industry.

Students will actively participate in case study and paper discussions. Both case studies and papers will be made available on the Moodle platform in a timely manner.

- Knowledge of the literature and fundamental theories and methods in the field of technology and innovation management;
- Ability to critically assess the literature on technology and innovation management.
- Capability to identify an innovative research question and formulate it into a research paper

This includes demonstrating that the student has done the readings, showing a willingness to answer questions, and paying attention to and engaging with classmates.

Final Examination: 40%
Students will be required to write a short essay with the purpose of (1) identifying a knowledge/research gap in the field of Technology and Innovation Management and (2) explaining why this gap is significant for theory development and/or management practice.
For students interested in writing a final Master's thesis on this topic, the short essay can take the form of a thesis proposal, including the identification of a research question related to the field of Technology and Innovation Management, along with a tentative outline of the thesis.

The course is interactive and based on the discussion of seminal papers. To prepare for discussion, student must read all the articles listed in the section “Seminars and mandatory readings” of the syllabus that will be also available on the Moodle Platform. The students are supposed to be completely familiar with the articles and think critically about their content. The instructor will guide the discussion and introduce the theme of the seminar but will not be the main contributor to the discussion.
