Toshio Miyake è nato a Kyoto in Giappone. Dopo aver frequentato le scuole in Germania e Italia, si laurea in studi nipponistici all’Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia (1997), per poi specializzarsi in sociologia, media studies cultural studies all’Università di Osaka e Ritsumeikan di Kyoto (M.A. 2000), e infine in letteratura giapponese comparata a Ca’ Foscari (PhD 2005).

Ha insegnato a contratto cultura, società e lingua giapponese in diversi atenei italiani (Venezia, Urbino, Perugia, Calabria, 2003-08). In veste di postdoc fellow all'Università di Kyoto e all'ICU, Tokyo (2008-10) ha condotto in Giappone ricerche sul campo sulle culture popolari (subculture giovanili e manga) e sulle rappresentazioni dell’Italia. Torna a Venezia come primo vincitore cafoscarino di un progetto europeo Marie Curie International Incoming (2011-13) e ottiene il Premio Ca’ Foscari alla Ricerca (Categoria giovani 2013). Dal 2015 è professore associato presso l'Università Ca' Foscari Venezia.   

Ha collaborato a progetti internazionali di ricerca inter-disciplinare (sociologia, antropologia, intellectual historyarea studies) con l’Università di Kyoto, l’Università di Kobe e l’International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken). La sua ricerca riguarda la rivisitazione critica dei concetti identitari di ‘Occidente’/‘Oriente’ e di whiteness/yellowness, nonché il loro ruolo egemone nei rapporti storico-culturali fra Italia (Europa) e Giappone (Asia).
