Overview

 Ca’ Foscari’s Humanities degree is notable for its emphasis on texts—both ancient and modern—and on the historical and cultural contexts that influence them. Students engage directly with sources, trace causes, and reconstruct contexts, acquiring invaluable skills in a world where “narrative” dominates cultural, social, economic, political, and journalistic realms.
The programme aims to develop professionals with advanced written and spoken communication skills, fostering specific abilities such as:

  • a critical approach to information and communication, whether in economic, political, or broader cultural contexts;
  • effective communication in educational settings and across society, supported by strong reading and writing skills and mastery of rhetorical tools;
  • the capacity to tackle complex problems, through direct engagement with sources and texts, critical evaluation of forms and messages, and the ability to navigate multiple fields of knowledge;
  • an understanding of the historical evolution of cultural phenomena—linguistic, philological, philosophical, anthropological, and literary—from antiquity to the present, recognising the links between works and society.

This foundational training underpins both of the degree’s specialisations: one focused on classical antiquity, the other on the modern era.

Teaching is the most common career path for Humanities graduates, usually taken through the three-year undergraduate programme and continued in the master’s. However, the skills gained also open doors to careers in publishing, communication, journalism, and cultural heritage management. In recent years, employers have increasingly appreciated the versatile, broad-ranging education that the Humanities degree provides.

The degree is structured into two curricula: Science of the Literary Text and Communication, which focuses on medieval and modern literature and philology, and Antiquity, dedicated to Greek, Latin, and Mediterranean antiquity. While each has its own focus, both share key disciplinary areas, methodologies adapted to different historical periods, and overarching scholarly goals

Multimedia

Hi.Storytelling

The project organised by the Department of Humanities, open to all students enrolled in its Bachelor’s Degree Programmes, provided an opportunity to showcase learning experiences creatively through video. The project, which may serve as an alternative to an internship, combined classroom lessons with practical work such as concept development, writing, visual design, and filming, and was conducted over five weekly sessions.
The  Hi.Storytelling project was made possible thanks to funding from the support measures of Ministerial Decree 752/2021.
