Why choose this programme
the programme provides a comprehensive chronological, geographical, and methodological approach to archaeological studies. It encompasses archaeology workshops and excavations, epigraphy courses, digital humanities laboratories, and internships in archaeological museums. The course equips students for entry into the Scuola Interateneo di specializzazione in archeologia (Inter-University School of Specialisation in Archaeology)
a comprehensive academic programme centred on studying the linguistic, literary, and historical-cultural traditions of the classical world and the ancient Mediterranean (Greek, Latin, and beyond). A broad array of specialised courses are available, and you will have the chance to customise your studies towards Western Asia, Egypt, and North Africa
this programme is globally acknowledged for its in-depth examination of epigraphy, focusing on inscriptions' linguistic, literary, historical, and archaeological dimensions, while incorporating digital epigraphy technologies
Overview
The degree programme in Ancient Civilisations: Archaeology, Literature and History combines two different master’s degree classes:
- Archaeology (LM-2);
- Philology, Literature and Ancient History (LM-15).
It is therefore an interclass degree based on a shared educational and cultural project designed to train professionals with expertise in a range of fields: Greek and Latin philology and literature, ancient history, Greek, Roman and Near Eastern epigraphy, and archaeology and art history from Antiquity to the Middle Ages.
The Archaeology track is divided into two curricula: Western Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe and the Mediterranean. The Philology, Literature and Ancient History track also offers two curricula: History and Philology and Literature.
You will have the opportunity to choose a highly specialised pathway that explores the traditions and thought associated with the religions of the classical world, the ancient Near and Middle East, India, China and Japan, as well as the monotheistic traditions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) and the forms of shamanism and magic, both past and present.
