Why choose this programme

1

this programme is intended for students seeking to specialise in the sustainable and innovative management of biotechnological processes, with a strong emphasis on environmental protection. It centres on green industrial processes targeting services and bio-based products utilising renewable energy and bio-resources

2

it is a multidisciplinary programme integrating microbial biotechnology and industrial microbiology with innovative fields such as environmental, energy, and process engineering; analytical and organic chemistry; risk and environmental impact assessment; and environmental law for multi-service companies

Overview

A distinctive degree programme, designed to train well-rounded professionals capable of shaping the production cycle of companies focused on environmentally friendly materials and energy carriers. We provide a highly practical and quantitative study route, immediately applicable in the business world.

Each course is closely linked to real-world situations through the analysis of specific case studies. Your training will cover several essential areas: basic chemistry and biology to muster core scientific concepts, engineering to design and size facilities; environmental assessment to analyse product life cycles, calculate carbon and water footprints, and evaluate the risks associated with hazardous substances; and law and economics providing a solid foundation in subjects such as environmental law and tariff systems.

Thanks to our extensive network, ranging from service companies to producers of eco-friendly materials, you will be able to complete your studies with a valuable hands-on experience. You will have the opportunity to carry out internships and write your thesis in collaboration with local businesses, thus tackling today’s pressing economic and social challenges.

If you are passionate about research, you can also complete your internship or thesis in our university laboratories. We provide access to a pilot plant platform situated within a real wastewater treatment facility: an excellent opportunity to carry out high-level applied research, collaborating on major European (H2020–HEurope) and regional projects.

Laboratories and other facilities

This degree programme will teach you how to use microorganisms such as microalgae and bacteria for environmental purposes. You will gain practical experience in using these organisms to treat wastewater and waste sustainably, to improve the quality of biogas as a renewable energy source, and to recover residual biomass by transforming it into new, useful products.

You will have many opportunities to apply theory in practice. Hands-on activities take place both in the laboratories of the Mestre Science Campus, where you can optimise biological processes, and directly in the field, at a real wastewater treatment plant in Treviso, home to an experimental platform that has been active for over 35 years. Thanks to strong collaborations with industry companies, you will also have the chance to complete internships and develop your thesis in a professional environment.

The programme will also equip you with a solid set of complementary skills, such as abilities in chemical analysis for studying environmental samples, and teach you to interpret data using statistical methods. You will also explore energy and sustainability, from the basics to an in-depth analysis of renewable sources. Finally, you will acquire a highly valued skill: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which is used to evaluate the environmental impact of products, and you will gain practical experience using OpenLCA software, which you can freely download and continue to use even after finishing your studies.

International network, experience abroad and employment

The Department of Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics maintains numerous partnerships with foreign universities and research institutions (including the University of Barcelona, the University of Southampton, INRA, and others). Moreover, through collaborations with key stakeholders such as Novamont and Contarina S.p.A., we ensure strong international connections.

Ca' Foscari has over 1,500 partnerships with international institutions, including programmes like Erasmus+ and Overseas, enabling students to study and intern abroad.

Ca' Foscari's Career Service guides you into the world of work with advice services, CV support, meetings with institutions and companies, and the search for and setup of training internships in Italy and abroad.

What you will study
