Why choose this programme

1

this programme represents a natural progression for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in the same discipline, enabling you to deepen your humanistic education from a holistic perspective

2

you will develop a solid linguistic foundation in both ancient and modern languages, giving you direct access to primary and secondary sources

3

the wide array of courses will equip you with interdisciplinary and cross-regional tools to analyse significant historical, cultural, and linguistic phenomena in today’s world

Overview

The degree programme in Languages, Cultures and Societies of Asia and Mediterranean Africa offers you a pathway to explore the languages and cultures of some of the world’s most fascinating and complex regions.
You will develop a strong linguistic proficiency in a language of Asia or Mediterranean Africa, complemented by an in-depth understanding of its cultural context across literary, artistic, philosophical, religious, historical, and political dimensions.

The programme is organised into four curricula:

  • China (language of study: Chinese)
  • Korea (language of study: Korean)
  • Japan (language of study: Japanese)
  • The Near and Middle East (you can choose to study: Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish)

In the China, Korea, and Japan curricula, you can choose to focus on either the classical or modern aspects of these civilisations, while the Near and Middle East curriculum is designed around a strong interest in contemporary issues in the region, explored with due attention to their historical roots.
Courses are delivered in Italian, English, or the language of specialisation, depending on the subject. All core courses in the Korea curriculum are delivered in English.

Opinions

Matthias Kappler

The programme combines linguistic, historical, artistic, and cultural skills, offering a comprehensive approach to exploring Asian and Middle Eastern societies in both their classical and modern dimensions.”
