Overview

The Master’s Degree Programme in Historical Studies: Middle Ages, Early Modern and Modern Ages provides a comprehensive examination of past societies from social, institutional, cultural, intellectual, and anthropological viewpoints. The programme covers topics ranging from the history of Venice to that of Europe and Eastern Europe, from Italian history to the histories of the Americas and China. Students may also select courses inspired by contemporary trends in global and environmental history, such as the history of military institutions, social history, oral history, or women’s and gender history.
This training fosters awareness, critical thinking, and an in-depth examination of both past and contemporary societies, helping students reconstruct human behaviour across time and space.

The programme equips students with comprehensive skills in reading, analysing, and interpreting various types of sources — literary, documentary, archival, iconographic, and monumental — along with a strong understanding of research techniques applied to original materials, both individually and within their broader historical and global context.
The study plan also provides a range of workshops aimed at hands-on learning, encouraging students to apply theoretical knowledge practically and to enhance their thinking skills. This workshop-based teaching method fosters transferable skills valuable in various professional areas and promotes creativity and teamwork while learning.
